I remember Coach Marten calling us out onto the field with the photographer in tow, and me asking why we were getting our photo taken. She simply said, “Because you guys won at OFSAA!” I was thinking, I did?
This was during my grade 9 year and I don’t even recall the final winning moment ever being grand or momentous. I do remember winning every race and didn’t think anything of it. The following year was a blast as well. We also had a dominant medley relay team at the regional finals and represented Carmel at OFSAA that year.
I wish I kept swimming during highschool (I quit the swim team after grade 10). I remember Coach Marten saying I would have gone far if I kept going. I tried to make a come back in grade 12. I thought I could easily get back into it. I spontaneously joined our pool’s swim team club in the late summer and saw my old teammates (Jeff B., Ryan D., Ian M.). After a couple of practice races, I knew something was off. We were all in disbelief that I didn’t win – any of them. I can even clearly remember Ryan D. saying “I can’t believe I beat Rex!!!!” 😉
Watching Forrest during his swim lessons yesterday brought me back to these swim team days. Forrest has the same body build as me growing up, and I’m noticing he is pretty good, if not dominating, at every sport he wants to play in. Hmmmm…..

A huge thank you to my childhood buddy Soraya for sending me a photo of the OFSAA group back at our old highschool.
