I just listened to Ethan Hawke on the Smartless podcast and was reminded of one of my favourite romantic films series, the Before Trilogy – Before Sunrise (1995), Before Sunset (2004) , and Before Midnight (2013).
It’s a romantic love story from when they first met in the first movie, reuniting 10 years later in the second, and seeing them reignite their relationship after being married and raising children. The films structure is based on normal, everyday conversations about every relationship-topic-imaginable between two people. It’s ironically as simple as that.
This analysis of the film from the Royal Ocean Film Society explains it well and there are tons of behind the scenes clips and stories from the actors and director.
The Before Trilogy DVD box set would be an excellent addition to any library too (hint, hint).
