Canada Day in Nepal

Today we spent Canada Day at the U.S. American Club. It was a great event where Canadians residing throughout Kathmandu came together for great food and fun. The evening of course started off with the Canadian national anthem, bilingually sung by a recording of Celine Dion (which surprisingly choked me up a bit), followed by a great BBQ (they even had Beaver tails!!!!) and an obscure yet entertaining Canadian quiz contest (ie. which Canadian comedian will spin between takes to keep a fresh perspective?).

Arggh, I just Googled the question and I know where they got most of their questions from: http://www.canadianaconnection.com/cca/trivia_eh.htm

The other interesting highlight of the event was the actual venue itself. The American Club used to be the actual U.S. Embassy before they moved up Lazimpath Road into their new monstrous fortress a few years ago. This facility is huge, a whole new world in itself with their own baseball diamond field, basketball courts, swimming pools, tennis courts, and the most hillarious part that I have seen, their own grocery store with American products (ie. sugar, cookies, cereal, bbq sauce all made in the U.S.).

The American Club is open to the public for a membership fee of probably something outrageous.

    Happy Canada Day guys!

It’s not called the double redundant “U.S. American Club” is it? 😉
