Damaged Olympus Stylus 1030 SW
The Olympus Stylus 1030 SW, but after a day of hard-core white water rafting and being thrown around in the raft, the cosmetic piece around the camera lens broke off. I decided to risk putting the camera underwater again and it seems to be still waterproof. Dear Olympus: will this affect the waterproof performance?

Olympus Stylus 1030 SW
“The camera that redefines tough. The Stylus 1030 SW is one tough camera. The Shockproof, Waterproof, Freezeproof and Dustproof design gives active people the confidence to take this camera anywhere and shoot in nearly any condition. Plus, the wide-angle lens lets users capture more of what they see. Great for divers, surfers, rafters, skiers and anyone with an active lifestyle. “
Yes, I bought into that but after reading the reviews and watching demos on YouTube, I thought it would be worth the investment to have to add this camera to my point-and-shoot arsenal. Compared to my last POS camera (Canon PowerShot A610), this camera is pretty decent. It is exactly what I was looking for when we go overseas (holding it’s own in various weather conditions and environments). Here is a link to the specs.
Aside from the key design and durability features, I was amazed at the amount of built-in software and camera settings that it had. What I didn’t like or am not used to yet is the “hand-held design” of the camera (my finger occasionally gets in the way of the camera lens). Secondly, I’m not a fan of proprietary batteries (my A610 used AA size batteries) and I was a little worried about investing in xD-Picture Cards (only Olympus and Fuji cameras use them and they currently max out at 2 gb). I was pleasantly surprised that it came with a micro SD adapter.
Other than that, this camera ROCKS!
(my first test was actually operating the camera in the shower…very cool and no, those photos were deleted).

Telephoto
I picked up a Sigma 70-300mm telephoto lens from Lens & Shutter Camera.
{cut and paste from Sigma}
Telephoto zoom lenses with tele-macro function, optimized for digital cameras.
The high performance telephoto zoom lens is ideal for digital SLR cameras. This lens has two SLD glass elements in the front lens group and one in the rear lens group It is able to shoot with maximum magnification 1:2 at the focal length of 300 mm. It’s the ideal lens for portraits, sports photography, nature photography, and other types of photography that frequently use the telephoto range.
New coating reduces Ghost and Flare.
The new multi layer lens coating and lens design reduce flare and ghost, which is a common problem with digital cameras and also creates an optimum color balance through the entire zoom range.
It is equipped with three pieces of SLD glass for high image quality
This lens has two SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements in the front lens group and one in the rear lens group, the lens has excellent correction of chromatic aberration through the entire zoom range.
Macro shooting with maximum magnification 1:2
High optical performance is demonstrated throughout the entire zoom range. It also has a switch that converts the lens to macro photography at focal lengths between 200mm and 300mm with a minimum focusing distance of 95cm (37.4 inches). In normal mode the minimum focusing distance is 150cm (59.1 inches) at all zoom settings. Maximum magnification between 200mm and 300mm is 1:2.9 to 1:2.
